focus on DEBENS

Debens' works intended for a public audience have an engaging sensitivity to their location. He was the main creative influence behind ONG, which was formed in Barcelona in 2001 and the first artist to extend street art beyond spray paint. Experimenting with painting, sculpture, photography and performance, Debens produces an alternative aesthetic and highly suggestive anti-consumer visual.

Deleting and omitting letters, suppressing elements of reclaimed works and revealing others, Debens' light touches are often topical reflections on contemporary culture.

Debens' Roadworks and Readymades

Chairs (sillas) began appearing throughout the city in early 1999. Debens' chairs were symbolic, 2D representations, featured as found objects in mixed media graffiti and the basis of an intensive propaganda campaign.

Strongly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg and Marcel Duchamp, Debens' works became the Readymades of the late twentieth century. Like Rauschenberg's Combines, Debens works are simultaneously paintings, sculptures and collections of found objects.
